IMAT

The International Medical Admissions Test (IMAT) is a standardized entrance exam used by several Italian universities to select international and EU students for English-taught medical, dental, and surgery programs. Administered by Cambridge Assessment, the IMAT evaluates critical thinking, scientific knowledge, and problem-solving abilities essential for medical studies.

Why Take the IMAT?

The IMAT opens the door to studying medicine in Italy at prestigious universities with globally recognized degrees. Italian medical schools offer an affordable, high-quality education and the chance to study in English in a culturally diverse environment.

What’s on the IMAT?

The IMAT consists of 60 multiple-choice questions divided into four main sections:

  • Logical Reasoning & General Knowledge: 22 questions that assess critical thinking and general knowledge on topics like history, literature, current events, and culture.
  • Biology: 18 questions covering essential biological topics including genetics, cell biology, and physiology.
  • Chemistry: 12 questions focusing on fundamental chemical principles, such as atomic structure, chemical reactions, and biochemistry.
  • Physics & Mathematics: 8 questions covering basic math and physics, including mechanics, thermodynamics, and basic mathematical operations.

IMAT Scoring and Results

Each correct answer scores +1.5 points, while each incorrect answer results in a -0.4 deduction. Unanswered questions score zero. With a maximum score of 90, students are ranked by their total score, and placement into medical programs depends on their performance relative to other candidates.

Preparing for the IMAT

The IMAT demands focused preparation in science and critical thinking. Many successful candidates use curated study resources, targeted practice exams, and specialized summaries to streamline their review. With competition rising, a strategic approach to mastering key topics and time management is crucial.
