Caring for survivors can take a toll on your own nervous system. Before you respond, regulate yourself first.
Pause. Take one slow, deep breath. Relax your shoulders. Unclench your jaw. Feel your feet on the floor. Remind yourself, "I am safe. I can be calm, present, and supportive."
When your nervous system is regulated, you're better able to communicate safety, think clearly, and provide the compassionate, trauma-informed care
every survivor deserves.
You don't have to be perfect. You just have to be present.
