When I first started putting patterns together and uploading them to Ravelry, I honestly didn't imagine that they would receive any attention. But they did, and now that I have left my university position in Canada and thus find myself with a lot of free time, I have been thinking of applying myself more fully to the creation of knitting patterns which I enjoy immensely.
I am a firm advocate of collective and collaborative models that avoid competition and provide equitable access to creative output and knowledge. Putting something like that into practice in a capitalist world is, however, not that easy. In looking at platforms for my patterns, I was hoping to find a model that reflected this outlook.
I settled on PayHip for their "pay what you can" model which works for me. At Ravelry, there will be a minimal suggested price and also 100% and 50% discount codes for each pattern. My suggestion to those who download a pattern for free is to pay a beanie forward if at all possible via local mutual-aid efforts. Nothing makes me happier than seeing my patterns out in the world! I hope you will enjoy them.
