Crafting Joy: My Journey as a Crochet Designer

Hello, Crocheters!

I’m Kate Kosenko Veselunka, an independent crochet designer from Irpin, Ukraine. Crocheting is more than just a hobby for me; I began learning at the age of six, and it has hooked me for life! I began designing my own crochet patterns in 2016 after fellow craftswomen frequently asked where they could find unique patterns for the one-of-a-kind projects I was creating. It’s amazing to share my creativity with others who are just as inspired!

As an avid crocheter, I have experience on both sides of the design process. I excel in techniques such as regular and lacy crochet, textured designs, multi-colored patterns, freeform basics, jacquard, and mosaic crochet. However, I’m less confident with Tunisian crochet and often rely on patterns created by talented designers worldwide. To be honest, I haven’t even tried some crochet techniques, like C2C, brioche, or broomstick! The magical world of crocheting seems limitless, with new stitches being developed all the time.

My early patterns consisted solely of detailed step-by-step instructions for creating projects like hats, shawls, and bags. As I gain experience and receive feedback from testers and customers, I continuously improve my skills as a pattern maker. My goal is to create designs that inspire crocheters and kiss straight to your heart. Each design or collection highlights something special that resonates with you.

Here are the core values I follow as a designer:

1. Crocheting Should Be Engaging:

Learning new skills while improving existing ones is essential. I enjoy combining basic stitches with more complex ones in a single pattern. Often, a part of the pattern will challenge you, making your brain work and allowing you to feel proud of mastering something new. The rest of the time, you can relax and enjoy the meditative process of crocheting with yarn.

2. Crocheting as a Means of Relaxation:

I believe that crocheting can be a wonderful way to unwind and de-stress. Practicing stitches in routine patterns that create their own rhythm is great for beginners, as it helps them gain more experience and allows their movements to feel light and free. This way, you can simply go with the flow instead of overthinking where to place the hook or how tightly to pull the yarn. With practice, your hands will start to do this automatically.

3. Crocheting Should Be Fun:

I love colorful creations because they set a unique mood. When you choose colors for your new project, you’re crafting something special for your soul, surrounding yourself with the colors it needs at that moment. In fact, I’ve met very few crocheters who strictly follow the original color schemes created by designers; most of you have your own preferences and prefer to use your yarn stash, playing with colors rather than purchasing ready-made kits.

4. Crocheting Should Inspire Creativity:

I have experience creating a variety of patterns, but I now lean towards those that encourage creativity, allowing crocheters to produce truly unique items. In my patterns, I provide options for size (including a guide on how to make the item larger or smaller, wider or narrower—giving you the chance to make small decisions to achieve what works best for you); colors (as mentioned in point 3); and I enjoy designing patterns that intermediate crocheters can easily adapt: turning a scarf into a shrug, transforming a square into a cardigan made of hexagons, or adjusting a square to the desired size for a bag. You can even experiment with gauge to achieve the best fit for a hat, and so on.

5. Most Importantly, I Want You to Enjoy the Process:

From the joyful anticipation of purchasing a pattern and selecting yarn to the celebration of enjoying the final result, I want your experience to be fulfilling. I provide detailed step-by-step written instructions that are suitable for beginners. While experienced crocheters might find them somewhat bored, these thorough instructions help you feel confident in following the pattern without getting stuck or frustrated.
