Welcome back to Every Beat Matters! π
Protecting Your Heart During the Summer Months
As we move through the heart of summer, many of us look forward to sunshine, outdoor gatherings, vacations, and spending more time outside. While summer brings many opportunities to enjoy life, it also presents unique challenges for our health and wellness.
This month is also UV Safety Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to discuss the connection among hydration, sun exposure, and overall heart health.
Many people don't realize that hot weather can place additional demands on the body. That's why staying hydrated, protecting your skin, and paying attention to how you feel can become especially important during the summer months.
How Summer Heat Can Affect Your Body
Our bodies are constantly working to maintain a healthy internal temperature.
When temperatures rise, your body begins cooling itself through perspiration and increased blood flow near the skin's surface.
This natural process helps regulate body temperature, but it also means you're losing fluids more quickly.
Without adequate hydration, you may begin to feel:
- Fatigued
- Lightheaded
- Sluggish
- Headaches
- Less focused
The hotter the weather and the more active you are, the greater your need for hydration becomes.
The Connection Between Hydration and Heart Health
Water plays a vital role in nearly every function of the body.
It helps:
π§ Transport nutrients
π§ Support circulation
π§ Regulate body temperature
π§ Support digestion
π§ Help muscles function properly
π§ Maintain overall wellness
When you're properly hydrated, your body can perform these tasks more efficiently.
Many people wait until they feel thirsty to drink water, but thirst can sometimes be a late signal that their bodies are already becoming dehydrated.
Developing consistent hydration habits throughout the day is one of the simplest ways to support overall wellness.
Why Hydration Matters More As We Age
As we get older, our sense of thirst naturally becomes less reliable.
This means many adults may not recognize they need fluids until dehydration has already begun.
In addition, certain medications, health conditions, and summer activities may increase fluid needs.
Simple hydration habits can make a big difference:
β Start your morning with water
β Carry a water bottle throughout the day
β Drink water before meals
β Add lemon, cucumber, or berries for flavor
β Eat water-rich fruits and vegetables
Small daily habits often lead to lasting results.
UV Safety Is More Than Sunscreen
When people hear "UV Safety Month," they often think only about sunscreen.
While sunscreen is important, UV safety is really about protecting your entire body while enjoying the outdoors.
Too much sun exposure can contribute to skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer over time.
Healthy sun habits include:
𧴠Applying sunscreen as directed
π Wearing a hat
πΆοΈ Using UV-protective sunglasses
π³ Seeking shade when possible
π§ Increasing hydration during outdoor activities
β° Limiting prolonged exposure during peak afternoon hours
Protecting your skin is an important part of protecting your overall health.
Community Spotlight
Sometimes the most powerful lessons come from someone who has lived them.
This week, we'd like to share a personal experience from Terri Penzerro, Founder of Exploring New Blessings.
For years, UV safety wasn't something Terri gave much thought to. Like many people, it was easy to believe that skin cancer was something that happened to someone else.
Until it happened to her.
After having skin cancer removed from both her face and her leg, Terri's perspective changed dramatically.
Today, she still enjoys spending time outdoors, but she is much more intentional about protecting her skin.
Wearing sunscreen, seeking shade when needed, and being mindful of prolonged sun exposure have become part of her wellness routine.
Terri often says that some of life's greatest lessons come through personal experience. By sharing her story, she hopes to encourage others to take simple steps today that may help protect their health for years to come.
Sometimes the smallest choicesβapplying sunscreen, wearing a hat, staying hydrated, or scheduling a skin checkβcan become powerful acts of self-care.
Thank you, Terri, for reminding us that prevention is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves.
Nature's Hydration Helpers
One of the easiest ways to support hydration is through food.
Many fruits and vegetables contain a surprisingly high amount of water.
Watermelon - Approximately 92% water
Cucumber - Approximately 95% water
Strawberries - Approximately 91% water
Celery - Approximately 95% water
Lettuce - Approximately 95% water
Oranges -Approximately 86% water
These foods not only contribute to hydration but also provide vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support overall wellness.

β€οΈ Reflection Corner
Take a moment to ask yourself:
How well am I caring for myself during this season of life?
Are you giving your body the hydration it needs?
Are you protecting your skin?
Are you listening when your body asks for rest?
Sometimes wellness isn't complicated.
Sometimes it's simply drinking the water, wearing the sunscreen, taking the walk, or sitting quietly in the shade.
Small acts of self-care often have the greatest impact.
Weekly Affirmation
"I honor my body by staying hydrated, protecting my health, and making choices that support my well-being."
Remember, wellness isn't about perfectionβit's about the choices we make each day.
Because every choice matters.
And every beat matters. β€οΈ
