🌿 SEPTEMBER: AUTOIMMUNE WELLNESS & AWARENESS

Week 1: Understanding Autoimmune Disorders

When the Immune System Turns on the Body

September is Autoimmune Wellness & Awareness Month at JM Vitality Hub.

Your immune system is one of your body’s most important defense systems. It works continuously to recognize and respond to things that may harm you.

But what happens when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells, tissues, or organs?

This is the basic concept behind autoimmune disease.

There are more than 80 recognized autoimmune diseases, and they can affect nearly every part of the body. Examples include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, type 1 diabetes, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and celiac disease.

Although these conditions are very different, they share an important characteristic: the immune system is involved in an abnormal response against the body’s own tissues.

Why Autoimmune Disorders Can Be Difficult to Recognize

One of the challenges of autoimmune disease is that symptoms can vary considerably from person to person.

Some people may experience:

â—Ź Persistent or unusual fatigue

â—Ź Joint or muscle pain

â—Ź Swelling

â—Ź Skin changes or rashes

â—Ź Digestive concerns

â—Ź Changes in energy or concentration

â—Ź Recurring symptoms that seem to come and go

â—Ź Unexplained changes in overall well-being

Many of these symptoms can also occur with other health conditions.

That’s why awareness matters.

A symptom isn’t necessarily a diagnosis—but a persistent symptom deserves attention.

What Causes Autoimmune Disease?

There isn’t one single cause.

Researchers believe autoimmune diseases can involve a combination of genetic, environmental, hormonal, and immune-system factors. The exact mechanisms differ among conditions and continue to be studied.

This is important because it means there isn’t one universal “autoimmune diet,” supplement, exercise program, or wellness practice that works for everyone.

Where Does Wellness Fit In?

A diagnosis doesn’t mean you have to stop caring for your overall health.

Wellness practices can complement appropriate medical care by supporting the foundations of a healthy lifestyle.

These may include:

Nourishment: Eating a varied, nutrient-dense diet appropriate for your individual needs.

Movement: Staying physically active in ways that are safe and appropriate for your body.

Rest: Giving your body adequate opportunity to recover.

Stress management: Developing healthy ways to cope with everyday stress.

Hydration: Drinking enough fluids to support normal body functions.

Connection: Maintaining supportive relationships and communicating openly with your healthcare team.

Listen to Your Body:

One of the most important wellness skills is learning to notice changes in your body.

Consider keeping a simple wellness journal to track things such as sleep, energy, symptoms, activity, stress, and questions you want to discuss with your healthcare professional.

You don’t need to become obsessed with every sensation.

Instead, become an informed participant in your own healthcare.
