Week 3: Living With Autoimmune Symptoms

Nutrition, Stress, Movement & Self-Care

Living with an autoimmune condition can sometimes mean learning to work with your body rather than constantly fighting against it.

Symptoms may change over time. Some days may feel relatively normal, while other days may require more rest, flexibility, and patience.

Although lifestyle habits cannot replace medical treatment, taking care of your overall well-being can be an important part of living well.

1. Respect Your Need for Rest

Rest is productive.

Quality sleep supports numerous processes throughout the body, including immune function, mood, metabolism, and recovery.

Developing a consistent sleep routine may help:

● Keep regular sleep and wake times.

● Create a calming evening routine.

● Make your bedroom comfortable and restful.

● Give yourself permission to slow down when necessary.

2. Learn to Manage Stress

Stress is unavoidable.

The goal isn’t to create a completely stress-free life. Instead, it’s to develop healthy ways to respond to stress.

Try:

● Deep breathing

● Meditation

● Prayer

● Journaling

● Time outdoors

● Music

● Gentle stretching

● Connecting with people you trust

Even a few minutes of intentional quiet can create space in a busy day.

3. Move With Your Body—Not Against It

Movement can support physical function, strength, balance, mood, and overall health.

But the right amount and type of exercise can vary considerably.

Walking, stretching, swimming, strength training, yoga, and other activities may be appropriate depending on the individual.

If pain, fatigue, or other symptoms make movement difficult, talk with your healthcare professional about what is safe for you.

Movement should support your body—not punish it.

4. Nourish Consistently

Instead of chasing restrictive diets, focus on a balanced pattern of eating that meets your individual nutritional needs.

A nutrient-rich eating pattern can include vegetables, fruits, protein sources, fiber-rich carbohydrates, healthy fats, and adequate fluids.

Some autoimmune conditions require specific dietary considerations, so individualized guidance is important.

5. Hydrate

Water is essential to normal body function.

Keep water available throughout the day and pay attention to your body’s need for fluids.

Remember that hydration doesn’t have to come from trendy drinks.

Sometimes the simplest choice is the best one.

6. Become Your Own Wellness Detective

A wellness journal can help you notice patterns without jumping to conclusions.

You might record:

● Sleep

● Energy

● Stress

● Physical activity

● Meals

● Hydration

● Symptoms

● Questions for your healthcare provider

The goal isn’t to blame one food or lifestyle factor for every symptom.

The goal is to become more informed about your own experience.

Give Yourself Grace

Perhaps the most overlooked part of wellness is compassion.

You may have days when you accomplish everything on your list.

You may have days when getting through the day is the accomplishment.

Both matter.

Resting doesn’t mean you’re giving up.

Adjusting doesn’t mean you’re failing.

Taking care of yourself is part of the journey.

The JM Vitality Hub 5-Question Reset

When your day feels overwhelming, pause and ask:

Have I nourished myself?

Have I had enough fluids?

Have I moved in a way that feels appropriate today?

Have I allowed myself to rest?

Have I given myself a moment to breathe?

You don’t have to do everything perfectly.

You simply have to keep showing up for yourself.
