Hello, and welcome to my blog. I'm so glad you're here.
This morning in my time reading the Bible (I try to read one chapter a day) I ended up in Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes was written by kind David's son Solomon who also was king. He talks about how he searched out what people should do while they are here on Earth. He built all kinds of things and planted vineyards and so forth. At the end of it all he saw that it was all vanity. He concluded that the best thing in life was this:
"There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God." Ecclesiastes 2:24
One thing that sticks out to me was that he said it was from the hand of God. So this is given to us by God.
I have a lot of thoughts like this lately. I've been pondering what I should do here on Earth and what is the best thing I could do with my time. Sometimes I feel like all the energy people put into things are worthless in the end. For example, there are people who've worked very hard to become the best in business, fashion, or achieve fame. On a smaller scale, we might work very hard and toil everyday at work or as a housewife. In the end it does seem grievous and vain.
"Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit." - Ecclesiastes 2:17
When I think about what Solomon said it's so profound. "There is nothing better" he says. To eat and drink and that I make my soul enjoy good in my labour. What does that mean? I think it means that there is nothing better for us to do here but to eat and drink and to enjoy good things with the fruits of our labour. So, for example when we get our paycheck and have that extra at the end enjoy it with something good. Like a new pair of slippers, taking your kids to the zoo, a delicious meal, a helpful book, or some hot cocoa. Maybe blessing a friend that could use your blessing. Loving other people with what you have. Something good. That's my take. Let me know what you think.
Nothing better.
