Rome, the Eternal City, is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. With its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture, it attracts millions of visitors every year. However, there's one aspect of traveling to Rome that often takes people by surprise: the cost of accommodation.
Whether you're planning a short city break or a longer stay, finding affordable lodging in Rome can be challenging, especially in the central areas.
I've visited Rome three times and I've stayed around Piazza Spagna, Piazza Navona and lately, in Trastevere. If it's your first time in Rome, I would suggest staying around Piazza Navona or Piazza Spagna, where you'll be within walking distance to all the main attractions. However, if like me, you've visited multiple times, I would highly suggest looking into the neighbourhood of Trastevere. I've always loved the atmosphere here and it's home to some of the best restaurants in Rome. It's a short 25 minute walk to the center (less using the public transport) and it's usually cheaper too.
Please keep in mind, that prices in Winter can be half the price they are in Summer. Rome is a perfect city break in Winter, so if you want to keep your travel costs low, you might want to consider that too. If you're traveling in the Summer, looking at neighbourhoods like Trastevere will save you some money.

You will not go wrong with all the three locations, my only recommendation is to stay away from Termini, even though the price might be cheap, or cheaper, it's seedy and might temper your experience of Rome.
I've wrote up a detailed travel guide which includes all you need to know when planning a trip to Rome, including transport, luggage storage facilities, restaurants, entrance tickets for the main attractions and some cool experiences you can book like a pasta making class.
