Best Comino Tour in Malta: My Top Recommendation

After years of exploring the best Comino boat tours in Malta, I’ve sailed on just about every type of vessel, from Turkish gullets to catamarans and large ferry-style boats. I’ve also tried popular operators like Supreme, Hornblower, and Seahorse. But for the past five years, one Comino tour has stood out above the rest and I keep coming back to it. I even chose this exact Blue Lagoon boat tour for my birthday this year, which should tell you just how much I love it.

In this post, I’ll break down exactly why this tour is my top pick for experiencing Comino the right way. Not sure about doing an afternoon trip? The same operator also offers a 6-hour day tour option that includes a stop at another beach in either Malta or Gozo, depending on the weather. But if you’re curious why I personally keep choosing the afternoon tour, keep reading. Here’s what makes it my go-to every time.

  • Departure time - The boat leaves at 5pm, which means the crowds thin out significantly. I hear people complain about the crowds every day, and yes, it’s true but if you go in the afternoon, you won’t believe the difference! Most boat tours run in the morning, with far fewer in the afternoon. It’s absolute bliss: fewer crowds and a stunning sunset. What more could you want? Worried about swimming? Don’t be! Between June and September, the water stays warm, and the weather is generally calm (just watch out for April and May, which tend to be windier.)

  • Departure point - It departs from St. Paul’s Bay instead of Sliema, which means a much shorter boat ride, around 45 minutes compared to nearly 2 hours from Sliema. And for context—I actually live in Gzira, just a stone’s throw from Sliema so it’s not about convenience. I simply prefer the experience offered by tours departing from St. Paul’s Bay. They’re just overall better in my opinion.

  • The tour lasts 4 hours - Around 2.5 hours spent swimming and relaxing between the Crystal Lagoon and the Blue Lagoon, and about 1.5 hours of travel time to and from Comino. And honestly? Unless you’re planning to hike around the island, that’s plenty of time to enjoy the sea, take in the views, and make the most of the experience. Comino is beautiful but very basic, there are no shops or restaurants, just a few kiosks selling fast food and drinks. So if you're short on time during your trip to Malta but still want to experience the stunning waters of the Blue Lagoon, this is the perfect tour.

  • The boat itself - Yes, it makes a huge difference! This tour uses a modern catamaran that’s wide, stable, and far more comfortable than most. If you’re someone who tends to get seasick, you’ll really appreciate the stability. The extra width also means better seating layouts and actual cushioned seats (not the usual hard plastic or metal benches you’ll find on many other boats). In fact, out of all the major Comino tour operators I’ve tried, this one easily has the most comfortable seating. Plus, the boat is sleek, modern, and really well-maintained. Honestly, the others just don’t compare.

  • There are plenty of both sunbathing spots and shaded areas on board, so everyone can relax in their ideal comfort zone.

  • Your first stop is the Crystal Lagoon, an equally breathtaking spot that absolutely shouldn’t be missed. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs, shimmering turquoise waters, and hidden sea caves, it’s a magical spot that can only be reached by boat. You'll be glad you made the stop!

  • This tour docks closer to the Blue Lagoon. Every boat has its designated berthing space, and this one just happens to have one of the best spots. That means a much shorter walk along the rocky trail to get to the lagoon itself—especially helpful if you're carrying bags or traveling with kids.

  • Even better, the boat is anchored right in the crystal-clear water, so you can literally jump in and swim straight off the boat without needing to go anywhere. It’s the perfect setup for a relaxed, hassle-free experience.

  • The slide from the top deck! It’s such a simple feature, but it adds so much fun to the whole experience. Whether you’re a kid or just a kid at heart, launching yourself into the clear turquoise water from the top deck is a highlight in itself. Trust me!

  • There’s also a light commentary on board pointing out the most interesting sights along the way, so you’ll actually know what you’re looking at as you cruise past Malta’s coastline. And to keep the vibe just right, there’s great music playing throughout the trip.

  • There’s also a bar on board, so you can sip on a cold drink while taking in the views, and if you get hungry, you’re covered, fast food is served on board too. You’re welcome to bring your own food and drinks, which makes for a perfect little picnic as soon as you dock on Comino.

Curious to learn more about Comino, its stunning beaches, the hiking trail, the camping spot for overnight stays, and the best times to visit outside the busy Summer months? I cover all of that in a detailed blog post right here.
