Kayaking in Malta: Coral Lagoon Adventure and an Optional Stop at Mellieha Bay

Exploring Malta's Northernmost Coast: A Kayak Adventure to Coral Lagoon & an Optional Stop at Mellieha Bay

If you’re looking for an adventure that blends kayaking, stunning coastal views, and a relaxing beach break, then a trip to Coral Lagoon followed by a visit to Mellieha Bay should definitely be on your Malta itinerary.

Your journey begins at Little Armier Bay, a peaceful and lesser-crowded spot on Malta’s northernmost coast. Before you set off on your kayak, take a moment to soak in the calm atmosphere and enjoy a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters. To guarantee your spot, it’s best to book your 2-hour kayak rental in advance.

The paddle from Little Armier Bay to Coral Lagoon takes about 30 minutes and offers a scenic route past rocky inlets and sea caves— great for photos and short stops.

Because the area remains relatively untouched by crowds, it’s a wonderful place to find some peace and connect with nature.

Important: If the sea is rough, kayaking and swimming can be risky, especially for those less confident in the water. Always be cautious and only enter the sea when conditions are calm. Although the cliffs may look tempting for a dive, cliff jumping is strictly prohibited due to several recent tragic accidents.

Coral Lagoon

After soaking in the tranquil vibes of Coral Lagoon, head back and drive over to your next stop—Mellieha Bay, which happens to be my favorite beach! As Malta’s most popular sandy shore, it’s easy to understand why both locals and tourists flock here. With its wide stretch of golden sand and shallow, family-friendly waters, Mellieha Bay is the perfect spot to relax and recharge. The beach is well-equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, and plenty of dining options nearby. If you’re feeling hungry, be sure to try the pizzas at Vecchia Napoli or Il Pirata—both are famous for their delicious pizzas and pastas.

If you’re in the mood for a more upscale dining experience in Mellieha, be sure to book a table at One80, —it’s one of the area’s top restaurants and a standout in Malta’s dining scene. The food is consistently excellent across the menu, but take my advice: whatever you do, don’t skip the desserts—they’re the best.

If you love seeing Malta through a local’s eyes—discovering hidden gems, exploring both near and far, and sharing great food spots with friends—you’re in the right place. If you enjoy days out like this, don’t miss my other favorite spots:
