If I could spend every sunny afternoon in Malta the same way, it would be here at Għajn Tuffieħa, a golden stretch of sand tucked away in the rural area of Mġarr in the North of Malta. It’s one of Malta’s most beautiful beaches, and it’s not just me saying that. This gem has earned Blue Flag status, meaning its water quality, environmental management, safety, and services are top-notch.
A Beach With a Natural Backdrop
What sets Għajn Tuffieħa apart isn’t just the sand and sea, it’s the setting. Clay cliffs rise dramatically around the bay, giving the whole place a raw, untouched feel.
To get here, you’ll have to descend about 180 steps from the car park, which sounds like a workout (and is), but it’s also the reason the beach tends to be less crowded than nearby Golden Bay.
It’s also home to the famous swings — a perfect Instagram spot with panoramic views over the beach.
Three Beaches, One View
This stretch of coastline is home to three distinct bays:
- Għajn Tuffieħa – The most scenic, framed by clay slopes.
- Golden Bay – Larger and busier, loved by locals and tourists alike.
- Gnejna Bay – Smaller and quieter, often a local secret.
From the Għajn Tuffieħa Car Park, you can take a short walk to Għajn Tuffieħa Tower. From here, the view sweeps across all three beaches, a panorama that’s worth pausing for before you take the steps down to the sand.
Exploring Beyond the Beach
If you like a bit of hiking with your sunbathing, Qarrabba Hill is right next door. Instead of heading down the stairs, you can follow the trail straight ahead into the Majjistral Nature Park, one of Malta’s best hiking areas. Here, clay slopes tumble towards the sea, making it a perfect spot for a short, scenic walk.
Sunsets You’ll Never Forget
While Għajn Tuffieħa is beautiful at any time of day, sunset is when it becomes truly magical. The sun melts into the Mediterranean in a blaze of colour, and you can watch it from:
- The beach while taking a swim
- Għajn Tuffieħa Tower
- The slopes of Qarrabba Hill
Wherever you choose, it’s unforgettable.
Singita Beach Bar – Sunset Ritual
If you want to make an evening of it, Singita Beach Bar is the place to be. As the sun sinks, soft lighting and laid-back music create an intimate atmosphere. Every evening, they host a Sunset Ritual, when the sun finally dips below the horizon, the sound of a gong marks the moment. It’s peaceful, grounding, and a little bit magical.
Drinks here are excellent, the food is decent, but for something more memorable, I recommend heading to Mġarr town for dinner after. Mġarr is the perfect place if you want to try traditional Maltese food, but it’s also home to one of my favourite wine bar & restaurants: Bottega Frawli. Go there, and thank me later.
Final Tip:
Before heading here, always check the weather conditions. If the wind is coming from the West or Northwest and stronger than Force 3, the sea comes straight into the beach. This can bring in algae, stir up the seabed, and make the water less pleasant for swimming. I always avoid it in these conditions, unless, of course, you’re into surfing. In that case, this is the spot in Malta, and the only place on the island that offers surfing lessons when the waves are right.
