Amsterdam is a major global city, attracting millions of tourists, business travelers, and students every year. The city is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, it's uniquely built on canals and due to it's layout and geography, land for new construction is limited. Now combine all of these factors and you'll find, like most other major cities in Europe, that accommodation prices are sky high!
Unless you are willing to stay in hostels, which mind you are equally expensive, then looking outside of the main Dam area is your best best to find cheaper accommodation (which might not necessarily be cheap). My recommendation is to look for accommodations in areas like De Pijp, Amsterdam Noord, Amsterdam West, which are still well connected by public transport.
During my latest visit, n May 2024, I've stayed in the De Pijp district and it worked out really well for me. This area is known or its cultural scene, cafes, and close proximity to attractions like the Rijksmuseum and the famous Albert Cuyp Market. It was also a short 20 minute walk to Dam square or 2 metro stops and a LOT cheaper!
Keep in mind that it's a budget friendly hotel so it's basic but it offers all you need; a comfortable bed and a private bathroom. It does have stairs but that's almost will all buildings in Amsterdam, since they are built tall and narrow.
