Livigno is an alpine village nestled in the northernmost corner of Italy, just a stone's throw from the Swiss border. It is a popular destination for winter sports and for those seeking a quiet getaway surrounded by breathtaking mountain views.
Thanks to its high-altitude location, snow conditions are great, from late autumn all the way to spring. Livigno's main ski areas are Carosello 3000 and Mottolino and between the two, you'll find 115 km of slopes, ranging from beginner to expert! These areas are equipped with modern lifts and are well-maintained, offering top-notch skiing and snowboarding experiences for visitors.
Accommodation:
Since Livigno is a resort in a remote part of the Alps, accommodation prices are on the pricier side, as you would expect. This apart-hotel with stunning mountain views, is one of the most budget-friendly options you are likely to find and where I've stayed. Check it out: here
Traveling to Livigno:
Fly into Milan Bergamo, Milan Malpensa or Milan Linate.
Then, take the Livigno Express shuttle bus, direct to Livigno. Check out the time table: here
If the time of the shuttle is not convenient with the time of the flights, you might want to take the longer route via train and bus as follows:
Train from Milan to Tirano (longest journey)
Bus from Tirano to Bormio
Bus from Bormio to Livigno
Don't be disheartened, you can break the distance by stopping for an overnight in Lake Como, Lecco for example (this is what we did) or you can stop in Tirano or Bormio, both wonderful and the ideal locations for two activities mentioned below.
Traveling in Livigno:
Once you arrive in Livigno, you will not need a car. There are four bus routes to reach any place in Livigno and it's free! The bus runs everyday from 7:30am to 8pm and you can find the schedule and all the bus stops: here
The bus stops in front of the accommodation linked above.
Activities in Livigno:
If skiing and snowboarding are not your thing, you can opt for activities such as a day at the spa, tobogganing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling or a husky sled ride to enjoy the snowy landscapes. Livigno is also, a duty-free zone, which makes it an excellent place to shop. The area is known for hearty mountain cuisine, pizzoccheri was my favourite dish!
Once on the topic of pizzaoccheri and food, I highly suggest visiting Tea Borch, especially in the evening. The restaurant first serves dinner and then it turns into a little bit of a party, dancing on table tops and a lot of fun involved. Make sure you book in advance.
Activities on the way to Livigno:
If you're travelling to Tirano, via train from Milan, you'll might want to add an extra day to take a scenic ride on the Bernina Express. The train departs from Tirano station and will take you all the way to Switzerland. St Moritz is a popular stop. This train ride is high on my bucket list and I can't wait to return to the area to do it. Read more about the stops and book your tickets in advance: here
Another great option if you're traveling from Milan by public transport is to visit the stunning QC Terme Spa in Bormio. Check out the prices: here
QC Terme also offers accommodation for those that prefer a luxurious treat. Considering that this accommodation is a 5 star hotel, the room rates are not too bad! You might want to consider staying one night here before continuing on to Livigno. Room rates include spa access. Check out the rates: here
