In Madeira, PR trails stand for "Percursos Pedestres Classificados," which are official hiking trails, that are well-maintained and marked hiking routes. These trails are breathtaking, varied, and full of personality, each delivering a unique way to explore the island’s natural beauty. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, panoramic peaks, or peaceful hikes, there’s a trail here waiting for you.
In August 2024, we spent 10 unforgettable days hiking and exploring the stunning island of Madeira. Among all the trails we tackled, PR1, PR6, PR8, and PR11 stood out as my favourites and below I'll detail why.
Best for...
- Thrill-seekers & experienced hikers: PR1
- Nature lovers & Levada walkers: PR6
- Geology & coastal beauty: PR8
- Easy, scenic: PR11
Since January 2025, Madeira has introduced a small access fee of €3 per person for most official PR hiking trails to help with maintenance and conservation. The payment can be made online in advance via the
PR1 – Vereda do Arieiro (Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo / Achada do Teixeira)
This is arguably Madeira’s most iconic hike, linking two of its highest peaks, Pico do Arieiro (1,818 m) and Pico Ruivo (1,862 m) and featuring dramatic ridgelines, tunnels, and breathtaking mountain scenery.
- Distance & Difficulty: Roughly 7 km one-way, moderate to hard difficulty. Cutting through steep staircases and narrow ledges over 3–4 hours.
- Why Go: Epic sunrise views, incredible mountain panoramas wherever you look. This trail truly feels like walking above the clouds.
⚠️ Only the first 1.2 km of the trail are currently accessible. Check out the full details on my blog post, Hiking the PR1 in Madeira - Real Expectations Not Just the Aesthetic.
PR6 – Levada das 25 Fontes & Levada do Risco
Located in Rabaçal, this dual hike takes you through lush landscapes to discover cascading waterfalls and blooming forest.
- Distance & Difficulty: Approximately 9.2 km round trip, easy to moderate difficulty, typically 3 to 4 hours.
- Why Go: Traverse through verdant Laurisilva forest to reach the beautiful 25 Fontes falls and nearby Risco waterfall, a serene, photogenic journey.
- Tip: Start early (around 8 AM) to avoid crowds at the popular trailhead and enjoy a more peaceful walk.
PR8 – Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço
This trail offers a dramatic contrast to the island’s green interior. The trail setting is rugged, and coastal with sun-drenched volcanic rock views. After a beautiful walk, you can take a dip in the crystal clear water of Cais de Sardinha, a beach located right at the end of the trail.
- Distance & Difficulty: About 6.5 km out-and-back, moderate difficulty; expect 2.5 to 4 hours.
- Why Go: Enjoy hardened volcanic landscapes and sweeping ocean views, this trail is a beautiful showcase of Madeira's geological diversity.
PR11 – Vereda dos Balcões
A shorter, gentler trek perfect for families, offering an accessible walk to a breathtaking mountain viewpoint.
- Distance & Difficulty: Approx. 3 km round trip; easy and very manageable.
- Why Go: A quick, rewarding escape end at the Balcões viewpoint for sweeping mountain and valley panoramas, and best know for bird watching, ideal for photos.
- Tip: Park early to beat congestion, especially on weekends or sunny days. Bring seeds to feed the birds, they're super friendly and will land on your hand to eat.
