Before your next payday: try this free exercise

Take a sheet of paper. Keep your figures private — you do not need to send them to us.

1. Write down the money available now and any income you are confident will arrive before your next payday. Keep uncertain income separate.

2. List the bills due before then, with their amounts and dates. Add realistic allowances for essentials such as food and transport.

3. Subtract those planned costs from the money available. A positive balance is money still to allocate, not automatically money to spend. A shortfall tells you which costs and dates need attention.

4. Choose one next action: check a recurring charge, make a spending limit for the week, or contact a provider about a bill you may struggle to pay.

Example using fictional amounts: 500 available − 320 in bills − 120 for essentials = 60 still to allocate. Your own figures may look different.

Want a guided starting point? The free three-day Money Reset preview helps you face your numbers, trace spending and identify essential costs. Try it before deciding whether to buy the full workbook.
