Food for Thought: The Hymn Jesus Sang

Before going to the cross, Scripture tells us that Jesus and His disciples sang a hymn before they went out to the Mount of Olives (Matthew 26:30). Have you ever wondered what that hymn was? Most scholars believe it was part of the Hallel Psalms (Psalms 113–118) — songs of praise sung during Passover, celebrating God’s deliverance, mercy, and steadfast love.

Imagine that — Jesus, knowing what was about to take place, still lifted His voice in worship. He sang words like, “This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24). Even on the eve of His suffering, He chose praise.

What a powerful reminder for us! When the road ahead feels uncertain, and the weight of life feels heavy, we can still sing. Praise changes the atmosphere. It reminds our soul that victory is already written.

But let’s take this a step further—how have you responded to the battles in life? When the storms rage and you don’t know what’s next, do you still worship and praise Him, even without knowing the outcome?

Jesus knew exactly what was coming—the betrayal, the suffering, the cross—and yet He sang. If He could worship in the shadow of the crucifixion, surely we can lift our voices in the middle of our trials. He has already promised that we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us (Romans 8:37).

So today, no matter the battle, no matter the uncertainty, worship Him anyway. Because His promises already tell you—you will overcome!
