“When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.” — Exodus 3:4–5 (KJV)
God didn’t speak to Moses until he stopped, turned aside, and noticed. It wasn’t the burning bush alone that changed Moses’ life—it was his willingness to pause and pay attention. That’s when God called his name.
And the first instruction? Take off your shoes.
Why Shoes?
Shoes represent where you’ve been, how you’ve been walking, and what’s been guiding your steps. By asking Moses to remove them, God was saying:
“The way you’ve been walking ends here. From this moment on, your steps belong to Me.”
This was a holy transition. A shepherd in the wilderness was being called to lead a nation. A fugitive was being called into freedom and destiny. Moses’ old path ended where God’s holy ground began.
A New Path, A Divine Purpose
Even when Moses tried to argue that he wasn’t qualified—listing his weaknesses, fears, and past mistakes—God still wanted him. Why? Because calling isn’t about what we bring to the table, but about God’s power working through us.
Holy ground moments are where God reminds us: “It’s not about who you are—it’s about who I AM.”
God Still Calls Today
God is still waiting for us to turn aside, to notice Him—in the ordinary and the extraordinary. And when we do, He calls us by name.

Where might God be asking you to “take off your shoes”? Is there an old way of walking He’s calling you to leave behind so He can lead you into something new?

Lord, open my eyes to notice You in every moment. Help me to lay down my old ways of walking and step fully into the path You have prepared. Thank You for calling me by name.
