Submit, Resist, and Win

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7 (KJV)

This single verse contains a life-changing formula for spiritual victory, but it’s all about order. Too often, we want to skip to the “resist” part without first embracing the “submit.” Let’s break it down.

1. Submit to God First

Submission means more than saying, “I believe in God.” It’s laying down your own will, desires, and decisions at His feet. It’s choosing His way over your way—even when it’s uncomfortable.

Submission isn’t about perfection. It’s about posture. It’s about bowing your heart in trust and obedience. When you submit to God, you place yourself under His covering, His authority, and His protection.

Think of it like an umbrella in the rain. Standing under God’s authority keeps you covered; stepping out on your own leaves you exposed.

2. Resist the Devil

Here’s the key: you can’t resist the enemy in your own strength. Many of us struggle, fight, and push back, but resistance without submission is powerless.

When you are fully aligned with God, His Spirit empowers your resistance. You can say “no” to temptation, fear, lies, and discouragement because you are standing in His strength, not your own.

The devil recognizes God’s authority. That’s why alignment with Him is so critical. Resistance only works when it flows out of submission.

3. And He Will Flee

Notice the certainty: he will flee. Not maybe. Not sometimes. Not if he feels like it. When you are covered by God’s authority and resisting in His power, the enemy has no choice but to retreat.

The devil knows he cannot defeat a fully surrendered believer. His only strategy is to deceive, distract, and divide. But when you stand submitted to God and resist him, he loses every time.

A Heart Check

If the enemy isn’t fleeing in your life, it may be time to examine the submission part. Have you fully surrendered, or are you holding onto control in certain areas? Full surrender leads to full authority.

Prayer

Lord, help me to daily submit to You—not just in words but in heart, choices, and actions. Teach me to rely on Your strength, not my own. And as I resist the enemy through Your power, let me walk in victory and freedom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
