The Alabaster Box — A Man’s Respect and a Woman’s Anointing

There’s something powerful about the story of the alabaster box — not just because of what was poured out, but who poured it and why.

When we read about the woman who broke her alabaster box before Jesus (Matthew 26, Luke 7, John 12), we often focus on her sacrifice — her tears, her hair, her oil. But if we step back, there’s something deeper here that speaks to both men and women.

A Woman’s Anointing

The alabaster box was her most valued possession — precious, sealed, and costly. It represented everything she had: her savings, her identity, her security. Yet in one act of worship, she broke it open and poured it all out at the feet of Jesus.

She didn’t come for attention. She came in surrender. She didn’t speak — her worship spoke for her. In a single act, she declared, “You are worth everything I have.”

That’s the fragrance of true worship — not performance, not position, but pouring out everything in love.

Her act filled the room with a fragrance that could not be ignored. Worship always changes the atmosphere.

A Man’s Perspective

As a man, there’s something humbling and honorable about witnessing that kind of surrender.

A man often expresses love through provision, protection, and presence.

A woman, however, often expresses love through devotion, emotion, and sacrifice.

When a man sees a woman pour herself out before the Lord, it reminds him of the kind of love Jesus received and returned. It calls him to honor the depth of her anointing — not with jealousy or pride, but with reverence and respect.

A true man of God doesn’t compete with her anointing — he covers it, celebrates it, and learns from it. He understands that her alabaster box holds a fragrance that helps usher in the presence of God in ways his strength alone cannot.

A Shared Anointing

Though Scripture highlights the woman’s act, in the Spirit, both men and women carry alabaster boxes. Every believer has something costly they can pour out — their time, tears, dreams, or pride.

A man’s alabaster box might look like surrendering control or letting go of the need to fix everything. A woman’s alabaster box may be her heart, poured out in love and faith. But both are precious to God. Both release fragrance in worship.

And here’s the beautiful balance of heaven’s design:

Men opened the path for Jesus to enter, but women anointed Him for His purpose.

Men prepare the way — they lead, protect, and build.

Women fill the space with worship — they nurture, intercede, and release healing.

Together, they form the complete expression of God’s heart.

Closing Reflection

Men and women were never meant to compete in worship — but to complete the sound of heaven together.

Men break the ground. Women release the oil.

Men open the way. Women fill the air with fragrance.

Together, they create the full expression of worship that honors the King.

So today, ask yourself:

💧 What’s still sealed inside your alabaster box?

💧 What would happen if you broke it open before Jesus?

“The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” — John 12:3

When your worship breaks open, everyone around you will know that He’s worthy.
