Hello again Beautiful
When I last left you, we were just settling in after breakfast on our first day in Bali, determined to take it slow after the chaos of our journey. We returned to our room and sat out in the little garden, soaking in the warm, humid air while I wrote about the events that brought us here.
The garden was peaceful, and for a moment, everything felt calm. But Bali wasn’t done testing us just yet. After half an hour, the rain began again. Still jetlagged and recovering from the exhaustion of the past 48 hours, we retreated inside. We attempted to track down our missing luggage, unfortunately, to no avail, so Jason went for 40 winks while I picked up my book and let the sound of the rain soothe me.
But after a while I noticed the rain was no longer sounding so soothing, it was relentless. I peeked out of the window and was met with a horrifying sight: the little garden out front was disappearing. The pathway was barely visible, the water had risen above the step level, and it was beginning to creep under the door and into our room.
Cue a quick call to reception! The manager arrived promptly, assessed the situation, and within minutes, we were upgraded to a deluxe room....bonus number one! Even better, since our luggage hadn’t arrived yet, there was nothing to pack.....bonus number two!
Once we'd settled into our lovely new room, we finally got some good news. After several phone calls and web chats, we learned our lost bags had been located and were already on a flight to Bali. Phew!. And not long after, reception called to let us know our suitcases had arrived at the hotel and were on their way to our room....bonus number three!
Once everything was unpacked and with the rainstorm finally over, and the sun breaking through the clouds, we decided to make the most of it and set off to explore our surroundings. We strolled along the beachfront, discovering charming little shops, cafes, and stunning views. We even treated ourselves to a cocktail and a late lunch at a lovely restaurant.
Feeling adventurous, we decided to take a different route back to the hotel, heading up from the seafront to the main road. We thought this would be a great way to explore the local area and grab some supplies from a mini-mart on the way back to the hotel.
What we hadn’t accounted for was the flooding. The further along we went, the worse it got. Some roads were so deeply flooded that we had to wade through water up to our ankles, and in some places, our knees. We evan, at one point, had to turn back entirely and find a different route as it was so deep. It quickly became a quest to find our way back to the seafront, where there was very little evidence of flooding. By the time we finally made it back to the hotel, we were drenched, bedraggled, and sporting the beginnings of blisters.
This holiday is turning into the trip that just keeps on giving!
So now it’s Monday lunchtime, Day 2. We woke to another early morning downpour, but by 7:30, the skies had cleared, and we’ve been basking in glorious sunshine ever since. We’ve decided to take the safe option today and relax by the pool. I’ve got my sun lotion, a good book, and a bottle of ice cold beer, and I don’t plan on moving for the rest of the day.
Thanks for following along with our Bali adventure, I’ll be back with more updates soon. Hopefully, the rest of this trip will be a little less eventful!
Until next time,
Jayne
