5 Must-Have Essential Oils for Your Vacation with Your Diffuser

Vacations are the perfect time to relax, explore, and create unforgettable memories. But long trips, new environments, and lively evenings can make it hard to stay calm. With your diffuser and these 5 essential oils, you’ll be ready to fully enjoy your adventures!

Here’s my tried-and-true selection for a serene and revitalizing vacation.

1. Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis): The Star for Kids’ Sleep

Sweet orange, with its fruity and comforting scent, is perfect for soothing kids (and adults!) who struggle to sleep in a new environment. It calms anxiety and creates a cozy atmosphere, ideal for a child’s bedroom on the go. It’s my go-to for peaceful vacation nights.

2. Lemon (Citrus limon): The Purifying Spark

Lemon is an invigorating oil that boosts energy and purifies the air. Perfect for musty hotel rooms or Airbnb rentals! Its fresh, zesty scent revives you after a long day of sightseeing. You can also use it as an "energizer" in the morning if you’re sensitive to jet lag.

Bonus: It’s great for cleaning the air and disinfecting surfaces (see my recipes below).

3. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus radiata): The Purifying Freshness

Eucalyptus is a gentle alternative to energize and purify the air. Its fresh, herbaceous scent clears the mind during travel fatigue. Perfect for refreshing a car or tent, it’s less intense than some oils and suitable for moderate diffusion. It’s ideal for bringing a pleasant scent to a rental that’s been closed up for a while.

4. Frankincense (Boswellia): The Spiritual Balance

Frankincense, with its deep, woody aroma, is ideal for moments of meditation or reconnection during vacations. It calms the mind during transitions (flights, jet lag) and fosters a serene atmosphere. It’s my choice for starry evenings or a morning yoga session! One drop on your wrists for a coffee on the terrace before the family wakes up, a nap by the river, or perfect for introspection and centering yourself.

5. Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia): The Hygiene Ally

Tea tree is a must-have for keeping your environment clean. Its herbaceous scent purifies the air and keeps bacteria at bay, perfect for shared spaces or campsites. A few drops in your diffuser or spray (see recipes below) ensure a clean and reassuring atmosphere.

Recipe for a Relaxing Vacation Diffusion

For a misting diffuser (100 ml of water), use one oil at a time to start :

  • Sweet Orange: 2–3 drops for instant relaxation, perfect for kids.
  • Lemon: 2–3 drops to purify and energize.
  • Eucalyptus: 2–3 drops for purifying freshness.
  • Frankincense: 2–3 drops for a meditative ambiance.
  • Tea Tree: 2–3 drops for a clean space.
  • Premium Option: Try the doTERRA On Guard blend (lemon, wild orange, clove, eucalyptus): 3 drops per 100 ml of water. This blend protects and energizes, perfect for travel!
  • Diffuse for 20–30 minutes in a well-ventilated room, ideally in the evening or during a break for kids. To diffuse effectively and get the desired results, check out my guide Diffuse Your Senses (€2.00) on Payhip.

Recipes for Air Purification and Surface Disinfection

1. Air-Purifying Spray (100 ml)

  • Ingredients: 80 ml distilled water, 20 ml 70% alcohol, 10 drops lemon essential oil, 10 drops tea tree essential oil.
  • Preparation: Mix in a glass spray bottle. Shake well before each use.
  • Use: Spray in the air of a vacation rental (bedroom, living room) to purify the atmosphere. Avoid spraying near children or pets. Ventilate afterward.

2. Surface Disinfectant Spray (100 ml)

  • Ingredients: 50 ml distilled water, 50 ml white vinegar, 15 drops lemon essential oil, 10 drops tea tree essential oil.
  • Preparation: Mix in a glass spray bottle. Shake before each use.
  • Use: Spray on surfaces (handles, tables, switches) in a rental, let sit for 1 minute, then wipe with a clean cloth. Test on a small area first for delicate surfaces.

A Touch of Freshness with a Roll-On

For moments when you need a pick-me-up (headaches, fatigue), I love the doTERRA Peppermint Touch roll-on (pre-diluted). Apply it to your temples or wrists for an instant cooling sensation. Avoid the eyes and do not use on young children.

Precautions for Safe Diffusion

  • Dilution: Always dilute oils with water in a misting diffuser or with a carrier for sprays.
  • Safety: For children, pregnant women, or pets, limit diffusion to 20 minutes and ventilate afterward. Avoid eucalyptus for young children.
  • Ventilation: Ensure the space is well-ventilated after diffusion or spray use.
  • Quality: Choose pure oils like doTERRA (CPTG certified) to avoid irritation.

A Gentle Strategy for a Zen Vacation

Vacations are a time to recharge, but unexpected changes and new environments can disrupt your balance, especially for kids. Diffusing an oil suited to the mood (sweet orange to soothe little ones, lemon to re-energize) can turn an average day into a memorable moment. Alternate oils based on your activities: lemon or eucalyptus for active days, sweet orange or frankincense for calm evenings. Over time, this routine will become your ally for stress-free vacations!
