Thanks for signing up to my Crochet course - I can't wait to get started with you!
Below is a list of basic equipment you will need to get started on the course. I have included the items you need to have. If you need to (or would like to!) buy some equipment for the course, I have some suggested examples in different budget ranges, of makes that I know are good quality.
Hopefully this is a guide for you but I would encourage you to buy the best tools that you can afford, as not only these tools will last you a long time if you hopefully love this hobby as I do, but also that these tools are the best for beignners because they are smoother, and better at handling the yarn, making the learning process easier for you.
- Crochet Hook - one hook of 4mm
- Yarn - at least 4 balls of yarn, DK weight in different colours - please bring a normal texture yarn (e.g. not novelty yarn with fluff, or tinsel)
- Scissors to cut yarn with
- Tapestry needles, to sew in ends
- (Optional) Locking stitch markers
- (Optional) If you have a pattern you have your eye on of something you want to create, please feel free to bring this along, ditto if you have already got some yarn for it or want some advice on what yarn to get.
Shopping Recommendations
I have given examples of online stores that sell this equipment. If you'd like to buy something locally, Sew Knit Craft, John Lewis or Hobbycraft stock tools. If you wish to buy a whole set of new tools that I've recommended and wish to take advantage of free postage spends of £25 and over, go for Wool Warehouse.
Crochet Hook - One hook 4mm.
Again if you already have a hook please feel to bring this along, if you're looking to buy one, my main recommendation is the Clover Amour hook - these are the hooks I use and they are one of the best ones you can buy - again the set is more cost effective if you take this hobby forwards. Unfortunately, these are not in stock in local stores and can only be bought online. If you aren't able to buy online, KnitPro Waves are an alternative.
Single Clover Amour Hook 4mm £5.99
Clover Amour Crochet Set £49.99
Yarn - at least two balls of DK yarn
If you take this hobby forward you will find yourself spending lots of money on yarn! For beginners however, working with inexpensive acrylic yarn is the best way to start. Most acrylic yarn these days are good to use, I've given a couple of examples below which have good colour options. Please feel free to bring more than two colours if you have a project in mind - we will be learning how to change colours in the course.
Stylecraft Special DK - £1.99
James C Brett Top Value DK - £1.69
Scissors
Most scissors will be fine for crafting but embroidery scissors are best if you're looking to buy a pair.
Millward have some funky neon coloured ones - £4.15
As well as some pretty rose gold stork ones - £7.20
Tapestry needle
You need needles with large enough eyelets for wool. I really recommend this set from Clover that come with a little tube and have a bent needle end to pick up stitches to go underneath them:
Clover tapestry needle set - £3.99
Stitch markers
These are more for when you are working in the round and are optional - you can make them from a loop of yarn, or I've fashioned them from my little girl's hairbands when I was in a fix and needed one!
For more advanced crochet, the lockable stitch markers are very useful but we won't need them for this course.
