Did you know April is National Poetry Month?
I love poetry. As a matter of fact my first paid publications were for poetry. I love the wordplay, imagery, lyricism, and power it has to move readers and make people think. There is an artistry and intellegence to creating poetry. There's a connection to all the things a poet has read, every painting they've ever happened upon, every song. Love, joy, heartbreak, hell, even a good meal can inspire a beautiful piece.
When I taught english the poetry modules seemed to first baffle, then amaze the students. It was exhilirating watching them find pieces that spoke to them and break down meaning line by line.
I think as a people we should definitely talk about and explore poetry more. We should share our favorite poems that lift us up, make us smile, and the ones that leave us slack-jawed and gasping.
If you want to expolore some of my poems, check out the list below. My 2021 standalone collection from is available from BLF Press.
