Review: Early Voter Gets the Groom by La Toya Hankins

Recently I had the opportunity to read the latest short story from author La Toya Hankins. Early Voter Gets the Groom.

In a short space Hankins captures civic responsibility, scorching attraction, cute banter, and queerness seamlessly. A perfect combination of feel good reading.

The descriptions are lush and enticing throughout - “eyes the color of aged cognac and a mouth that seemed perfect for making promises.” The chemistry of the two main characters crackles on the page and will have you squirming, wondering will they, won’t they?

And Hankins signature setting of NC and elements of delectable southern cuisine are ever present. My favorite line- “I’m not a big pork eater, but I occasionally indulge in the swine.” Lmao if you know you know. (And I’m team Eastern BBQ all the way.)

A perfect quick read with all the feels.

I loved the vivid descriptions and the connection the two main characters had. The queerness in the story gives us non-binary rep as well which is refreshing. Grab a copy and check out La Toya's other books and stories.
