Self Care for Writers

As a writer it is very important that we take care of our hands, voices, mind, and overall body. We sit for hours sometimes hammering out the details of complex plots, character backgrounds, and so much more. We can get so wrapped up creating and working through the intricacies of a story that we forget to get up and stretch. There have been days when I’ve been working and so deep in the groove I’ve worked from morning to late in the night without stepping outside, or speaking to another person.

I try not to do that anymore. I make sure I get up and walk about, wiggle my fingers, roll my neck and wrists, and even my ankles.

I have to take care of my mind too. The publishing industry has a way of championing some and overlooking others. It can wreck your confidence. It doesn’t matter if you’re a veteran writer or a newbie, the ups and downs of submitting work, pitching agents, or even asking for reviews can be a huge strain.

Other things I do as a matter of self care:

  • Celebrate my writing - every word written is progress, every time I show up to the page is a WIN!
  • I check in with my writer friends - the support is a great pick-me-up.
  • I acknowledge an idea when it hits and take a few minutes to jot it down.
  • I take care of my responsibilities and chores so I can honor my writing time.

And a few things I don’t do (try not to at least)

  • Don’t compare myself to other writers - it can be hard, but I try.
  • Don’t obsessively check sales reports.
  • Don’t read into bad reviews.

If you’re a writer or creative, what are some of your self care habits? Leave them below in the comments.
