If you’re just starting out in candle making,
you don’t need to buy everything at once.
A simple, essential set of tools and materials is more than enough to begin.
Over time, you’ll discover what works best for you
and gradually expand your collection.
1. Wax
First, decide what type of candles you want to make.
* Pillar wax – for candles that are removed from a mold.
* Container wax – for candles poured into jars or vessels.
2. Molds or Containers
* For pillar candles – a mold.
* For container candles – a glass, ceramic, or gypsum vessel.
3. Wick
A cotton wick is a great place to start.
Pre-waxed is preferred, but not required.
When choosing a wick, consider:
* The diameter of your candle
* The type of wax
* Whether you are adding fragrance or other additives
Wicks should always be tested,
as the same wick can burn differently depending on the wax blend.
4. Melting Tools
You can purchase a ready-made wax melting set,
but it’s not necessary in the beginning.
A regular stove and a double boiler setup
are perfectly sufficient — just follow safety precautions.
You’ll need:
* A metal pouring pitcher or melting pot
* A pot for a double boiler
* A stove
* A thermometer (important for controlling melting and pouring temperatures)
* A wooden stick for stirring
5. Optional but Helpful
* A hair dryer – useful for preheating containers, removing surface bubbles, or smoothing the top
* Candle dye (optional)
* Fragrance oil (optional)
