What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced "Ray-Key") is a Japanese energy healing technique that promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and supports the body's natural ability to heal. The word Reiki comes from:

  • Rei = Universal Life Energy
  • Ki = Vital Energy (also known as Chi or Prana)

The History & Origins of Reiki

Reiki was founded by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 20th century in Japan. After years of spiritual study and meditation, he developed the Usui Reiki System of Natural Healing. Reiki was later introduced to the West and has since grown into various lineages and styles, all maintaining the core principle of energy healing.


How Does Reiki Work?

Reiki practitioners use their hands to channel healing energy to themselves or others. This can be done through:

Hands-on Healing – Placing hands lightly on or above the body to transmit energy.

Distance Healing – Sending Reiki energy across space and time, allowing healing without physical contact.

Chakra Balancing – Clearing energy blockages within the body's energy centres.

Dr. Mikao Usui developed five guiding principles to help Reiki practitioners align with healing energy in daily life:

Just for today, I will be grateful.

Just for today, I will do my work honestly.

Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.

Repeating these principles daily helps cultivate a positive mindset and deeper connection to Reiki energy.

Set an Intention – Silently affirm: “I welcome healing energy into my body and spirit.”

Hand Placement on the Crown – Place your hands gently on the top of your head. Visualize light entering your body.

Hand Placement on the Heart – Move your hands to your chest, feeling warmth and healing energy.

Hand Placement on the Solar Plexus – Place your hands just above your navel, focusing on personal power and balance.

Breathe Deeply – Inhale positivity, exhale tension. Stay in this state for a few minutes.

End with Gratitude – Thank yourself and the energy for the experience.
