Hey there punk & parents of said punks!
If you want to become more "scout-able" (and therefore get more offers to play ie.be recruited) you just HAVE to, MUST, VITAL to look into your mindset.
A common mindset myth is that "mindset is just for clutch moments!".
Ahhh no, no, no.
Mindset is so much more, that's just cherry on top of the cake stuff. Mindset is everything from the negotiation of collegiate scholarship offers, to the way you communicate with your coach to how you turn up when you've hit a rough patch. Here's the kicker, most athletes (and most humans) don't know where to start when it comes to nurturing a growth mindset.
So I thought I would share the roadmap down below >> 12 simple Success Principles for Athletes! Here's my promise to you...implement just 3 of these principles this season, and watch your game GROW. Trust me, I'm not making this up. Here they are, and be sure to leave me a comment on which 3 you'd like to take a stab at implementing!!
Let's go Punks. Get your mindset on!!
🧠 12 Success Principles — a practical road map - greater results for Athletes!
1. Know Your Outcome
🎯 Clarity creates momentum—when you know what you want, your mind and body align to achieve it.
🏀 Example: A basketball player sets a specific goal to improve their free-throw percentage from 65% to 80% by the end of the season. This focus changes how they practice, review tape, and manage pressure during games.
2. Take Laser Like Action
⚡ Success doesn’t come from theory—it comes from showing up and executing, even imperfectly.
⚽ Example: A footballer commits to staying 15 minutes after each training session to practice penalty shots—translating a mindset shift into visible progress.
3. Have Sensory Awareness
👀 Winners notice details others miss—your awareness is your superpower in the moment.
🎾 Example: A tennis player picks up on their opponent’s nervous body language before serving and adjusts their strategy to apply more pressure during critical points.
4. Be Flexible in Your Behaviour
🌀 Sticking to one approach is not persistence—it’s limitation. Winners adapt.
🏉 Example: A rugby captain realises the team is struggling with the pre-planned formation, so mid-game, they shift tactics to a faster, more open play style.
5. Operate from a Physiology and Psychology of Excellence
🧍♂️ How you carry yourself shapes how you think and feel—posture affects power. Posture or body language affects your thinking BIG TIME>
🏐 Example: A volleyball player uses upright posture and controlled breathing to recenter before serving after making an error, instead of slumping and spiralling mentally.
6. Build Rapport
🤝 Influence starts with connection—when you create trust, doors open.
🏑 Example: A team captain takes time to learn how each teammate best receives feedback, helping build stronger communication and unity on the field.
7. Respect Others’ Models of the World
🧭 Everyone sees the game through different lenses—understanding this builds team culture.
🏓 Example: A doubles partner who prefers calm over hype is respected, so their teammate tones down the sideline energy and uses quieter support strategies to maintain chemistry.
8. The Map is Not the Territory
🗺️ Your perception is not reality—it’s a filtered version. Challenge your assumptions often.
⛳ Example: A golfer frustrated by a “difficult course” reframes it as an opportunity to sharpen precision, breaking through a mental block they created. Or a team that echos “away games can’t be won!”
9. There is No Failure, Only Feedback
🔄 Every setback is data—champions collect insights, not shame.
🏃 Example: A sprinter uses their second-place finish to analyse start speed and cadence, adjusting their drills instead of spiralling into self-doubt. Curious not critical.
10. Every Behaviour Has a Positive Intention
🔍 Even self-sabotage or passive aggressive has a positive intention (usually its a trying to protect you thing)—find the need underneath the action.
🥋 Example: A martial artist realises they freeze in competition not from fear of failure, but from a deep need to avoid disappointing their parents —unlocking a new emotional strategy.
11. People Have All the Resources They Need
🧰 Your potential is already within—you just need to activate it and clear the interference.
🏊 Example: A swimmer taps into a visualisation routine that reminds them they’ve done the hard work—bringing calm and clarity before a race.
12. If One Person Can Do It, Others Can Learn It
📚 Success leaves clues—model what works and make it your own.
🏒 Example: A young hockey player studies clips of their idol’s footwork and mindset - incorporates those same drills & mindset tune ups into their own routine, speeding up skill development.
