In 1966, Mark was five years old when his father, Captain Robert Treat Paine, died in a plane crash in West Texas. Nearly sixty years later, unanswered questions, military records, family memories, and unexpected discoveries led Mark to write a Cold War thriller rooted in the story his family had carried for generations.
The journey eventually brought him back to Fort Jones, California, the hometown of his grandfather, prolific Western novelist Lauran Paine. It was also the place where, at thirteen years old, Mark was told he would never become a writer.
But the town remembered things Mark did not.
