The region that constitutes Morocco has been inhabited since the Paleolithic period more than 300,000 years ago; Idris I founded the first Moroccan state in 788 , and was subsequently ruled by a series of independent
dynasties, reaching its peak as a regional power in the 11th and 12th centuries , when it controlled most of the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghreb under the Almoravid and Almohad dynasties . [26] Morocco faced external threats to its sovereignty in the 15th and 16th centuries , with Portugal seizing territory in the north and the Ottoman Empire encroaching eastward; the Marinid and Saadi dynasties resisted and succeeded in repelling foreign domination. The Alaouite dynasty , which rules the country to this day, seized power in 1631 , and over the next two centuries expanded its diplomatic and commercial relations with the Western world . France and Spain divided the country into protectorates in 1912 , with the Tangier International Zone reserved ; after intermittent resistance and revolutions, Morocco regained its independence and was reunified in 1956 .
Since independence, Morocco has remained relatively stable, with the sixth-largest economy in Africa and significant influence in both Africa and the Arab world . Morocco is a middle power in world affairs , [27] and is a member of the Arab League , the Union for the Mediterranean , and the African Union . [28] The country has a strategic partnership with the Gulf Cooperation Council , [29] an economic partnership ,
