About The Series
This introduction explains why this series exists: to help readers get better pictures and sound from the equipment they already own by understanding what really matters, what can be measured, and what should always be checked.
The starting point
Having retired, I did what a lot of people do with some time and a bit of money: I bought equipment. Good equipment: a display with impressive numbers on the box, loudspeakers that measured well and all the shiny boxes and badges a showroom could offer. The picture and sound were genuinely impressive. And yet something still felt missing, in a way I could not quite name.
With time on my hands, I went looking for the answer and found a much bigger question than I expected. What actually makes a picture look right, or a room sound honest, turned out to have very little to do with the numbers on the box. Understanding why took a great deal of research. Then I applied what I had learned, not by buying anything new but by finally starting to get the best out of the equipment I already owned.
The discovery
The improvement was profound. Considerably more noticeable in fact than most of the new equipment itself had ever been. That drew me further in. Once I began to understand the subject properly, I wanted to write it down - not just for myself but for anyone else who had bought the shiny boxes and still felt that something was missing.
Writing it down was the easy part.
Turning those notes into something coherent, edited and usable was another matter entirely. As the work grew, it became clear that I could not finish it alone, so for a long while the project sat shelved.
Meanwhile, my own system kept improving, not because I bought new components but because I continued learning how to use what I already had more effectively.
The project that followed
The turning point was the rapid advance of AI tools. What had once been unmanageable by hand became possible: not because AI offered a shortcut but because it could help check, cross-reference and structure the work at a scale I could never have achieved alone.
The stance behind the work
I have no scientific or engineering background. I'd rather say that plainly than let anyone assume otherwise. What this series offers instead is the same discipline it asks of its readers: check everything, verify before believing and never let a claim rest on authority when it can rest on evidence instead.
