Mugwort has an affinity for Women's reproductive systems. This is no coincidence, considering her latin name is Artemisia Vulgaris and she is connected to the Greek Goddess Artemis, protector of Women and Children.
Mugwort is an emmenagogue, meaning: it's use increases blood flow to the pelvic (uterus) region, which can induce delayed or late menstruation. Additionally, emmenagogic herbs like Mugwort can be used to terminate unwanted pregnancies due to their ability to induce abortion.
Mugwort also has:
- antispasmodic effects (helping prevent muscle spasms)
- anti-inflammatory effects
As a result, the use of Mugwort can help alleviate menstrual pain (cramps). All in all, this herbal ally is amazing for Women! Although, NOT to be used by pregnant women, as the increased circulation in the uterus can cause unwanted complications.
There are many ways to use this magical herb:
- oil or salve (I have oil available for purchase)
- tea or tincture (internal use)
- yoni steam; great for the days leading up to your period, I will write another blog on this!
- moxibustion (used in chinese medicine)
Tea Reciple: add 1.5 teaspoons of Mugwort leaves to a cup of boiling water, steeping for 10 minutes then straining off the leaves and serving. Add some honey to cut the bitterness.
