How to Gauge Exercise Intensity to Make Proper Gainsđź’Ş

True story!  I was mortified, no matter how much his wife tried to assure me, my face must have been as pale as her husband’s when he puked. Over 20 years ago  I worked for one of the major gym chains and was responsible for fitness assessments to promote personal training.   A few days later after a couple of new members had joined, the wife came up to me and told me a story about her husband.  Just as soon as she finished he appeared and once brought up to speed he was laughing like it was a big joke.  His wife gave him the look and said, “Imagine if you had just exercised some discipline, we could have been here two days ago instead of having to wait for you to feel better.”  This is what happened: he had done his assessment and felt he wasn’t pushed hard enough so he decided to take matters into his own hands and put in an intense workout.  I’m all for determination, but not when someone hasn’t trained in decades, is a prime candidate for a number of health related issues based on some metrics and has an ego far more expansive than the waist line that wasn’t what it used to be.

MINDSET TIP TO SUCCEED AT YOUR FITNESS AND WELLNESS GOALS

If there was a theme song for this one middle-aged individual, it would be “Glory Days” by Bruce Springsteen.  I’m middle age now and believe me when I tell you there is no desire to relive my athletic glory days.  With that being said, because each year of life is a blessing and I’m in unfamiliar territory, I’m still pushing the envelope to explore what fitness in my 50s can look like.   A long time ago it dawned on me because I was indoctrinated in my early training days with the maxim, no pain no gain, that it’s one of the most ridiculous things ever.  Cue “Macho Man” by the Village People.

So the shock on my face hearing the story is the same sort of shock your body experiences when training for the first time in a while or over training.  This is pain. Now, to be fair, there is a balance or threshold.

HOW TO GAUGE WORKOUT INTENSITY - ONE METHOD

If you need to feel like you’ve been annihilated after every workout, I offer a meditation course that may help you heal some trauma. And I understand, different strokes for different folks but a weight room is not a dungeon.  The burn you get when working out is acceptable and tolerable.  To a degree.  If you haven’t worked out in a while, you may be more sore the second or third day after training as your body readjusts.   If you’re in pain for more than a few days, take a hint, it’s not healthy.  Not only that, it becomes a hindrance to gains.

ACHIEVE YOUR FITNESS GOALS PROPERLY WITH EFFICIENT METHODOLOGY

When it comes to life lessons, yes pain can be a great teacher, but wisdom isn’t spelt wis-dumb.  And if the lesson isn’t learnt the first time, and is a necessary one, the consequences will ratchet up.  The irony eh?
