Many believers claim they cannot understand God's Word, but what if the problem is not a lack of understanding but a lack of surrender? The Bible was never meant to be merely read—it was meant to transform. Yet too often, we approach Scripture with preconceived opinions, selective obedience, and hearts unwilling to accept truths that challenge our lifestyles.
We ask God to speak while simultaneously resisting what He has already said. Pride, unforgiveness, bitterness, distractions, and unrepentant sin can cloud spiritual vision, making even the clearest biblical truths seem confusing. The question is not always, "Why doesn't God speak?" but rather, "Have I become unwilling to hear?" Sometimes the greatest barrier to understanding Scripture is not intellectual; it is spiritual.
In my book, What Hinders the Understanding of God's Word, I challenge readers to look beyond surface-level Bible reading and examine the condition of their hearts. God's Word is living, powerful, and able to pierce the deepest places within us, but it requires humility to receive it and courage to obey it. When we treat Scripture as information rather than divine instruction, we miss its transforming power. The truth is that God does not reveal His Word merely to increase our knowledge—He reveals it to change our lives.
Before asking for greater understanding, perhaps we should first ask ourselves a more convicting question: If God revealed everything He wanted me to know today, would I be willing to obey it?
