Spelling practice can feel frustrating when a child copies a word correctly, then struggles to spell it independently.
A useful starting point is to explore one spelling pattern together. Help your child hear the sounds, notice the letters and explain what changes.
This simple 10-minute routine gives you a manageable way to practise at home.
Before You Start: Choose One Pattern
Choose a pattern your child has already encountered at school. Use three to five words they can read and understand.
For a child still learning letter–sound relationships, begin with simple words and sound practice. There is no need to work through every spelling rule just because a resource covers Foundation to Year 4.
For this routine, we will use the “magic e” pattern:
- cap → cape
- tap → tape
- kit → kite
In these examples, adding a final silent e changes the vowel sound. This is a common pattern, rather than a rule that applies to every word ending in e.
Minutes 1–2: Read and Notice
Write “cap” and “cape” beside each other.
Read both words aloud, then ask:
“What changed in the spelling?”
“What changed in the vowel sound?”
Point to the a and the final e in “cape”. Explain that these letters work together to represent the long a sound.
Repeat with “tap” and “tape”.
Minutes 3–4: Build and Change
Use letter tiles, paper letter cards or a pencil.
Build “kit”, read it, then add e to make “kite”.
Ask your child to explain the change in their own words. If they are unsure, model it:
“Kit has a short i sound. In kite, the i and silent e work together to spell the long i sound.”
Minutes 5–7: Spell and Check
Say one of the practised words without showing it.
Ask your child to:
- Repeat the word.
- Say its sounds.
- Write the letters that represent those sounds.
- Compare their spelling with the correct word.
Remember: sounds and letters are different. “Cape” has four letters but three speech sounds; the final e is silent.
If your child writes “cap” for “cape”, ask:
“Read what you wrote. What could you add to make the vowel sound match cape?”
Then show the correct spelling if they need help.
Minutes 8–9: Use a Word in a Sentence
Ask your child to write a short sentence using one target word.
For example:
“My kite is red.”
Check the target spelling together. Keep the sentence manageable so the spelling pattern remains the focus.
Minute 10: Try One New Example
If the practice felt comfortable, try another word using the same pattern, such as “cake”.
Ask:
“How did you know which letters to use?”
If your child needs a prompt, return to the practised examples. One correct answer is encouraging, but revisit the pattern on another day to check whether it has stayed with them.
What to Practise Next
Choose your next focus according to your child’s learning needs:
- Magic e: cap → cape
- The doubling rule: hop → hopping
- Drop the final e: make → making
- Changing y to i: happy → happier
- Plurals with -s and -es: cat → cats; box → boxes
- The Floss rule: words such as puff, hill and mess
- Soft c and soft g: words such as cent and gem
These patterns have conditions and exceptions. For example, “happy” becomes “happier”, but “play” becomes “playing”. Teach the explanation alongside the example rather than asking children to apply a rule to every word.
Keep Practice Focused and Encouraging
Use a small set of related words, give help when needed and return to familiar patterns over several sessions.
If your child becomes frustrated, reduce the number of words or practise building them together. Coordinate with their teacher if spelling remains difficult, so home practice supports what they are learning in class.
