Proven Ways to Feel BEAUTIFUL—It’s Not What You Think…
Oriella Verdi
Do you ever hear that vicious voice that seems to delight in making you feel ugly and unlikable, and it just won’t quiet down?
Sure, wearing makeup can boost your confidence, especially if you are skilled at applying it and can achieve that flawless baked look. But when you glance in the mirror each morning at your face and body, what thoughts flood your mind?
Don’t get me wrong; I like makeup. However, relying on it to feel good is akin to an alcoholic numbing their pain with alcohol.
So, here is what I have learned to do to tackle that insidious voice that strikes unexpectedly:
Accept that some days you will feel good about yourself, while others will feel like you can't stand the way you look. Even those women you admire for their beauty have days when they don't like the way they look—it’s a universal disease!
A beauty therapist once confided in me that she compared her tummy to her eight-year-old daughter’s! That’s how irrational our minds can be at times.
After giving birth to my youngest child, I battled an eating disorder that plagued me for nine long years. To make a long story short, once I overcame that, I had to learn to coach myself.
Let's Get to the Point
Humans are creatures of habit, which means that to change any behaviour you want to modify, you must disrupt the established pattern.
On days when you feel vulnerable—when your self-esteem isn't at its peak—the mirror often becomes the weapon of choice:
'Has that wrinkle become bigger?' 'How noticeable is that brown spot on my cheek?'...Whatever is it that your inner critic keeps pointing out.
You find yourself checking the mirror, sometimes even resorting to a magnifying mirror to scrutinize every flaw. Each time you do this, it brings you down, yet you continue the cycle. It’s akin to knowing that a bully will confront you every time you walk through a specific alley, yet you still choose to walk that same path.
Break the Pattern
Whenever you feel the urge to scrutinize your flaws in the mirror, resist it! Even just a little bit... No! Not even a tiny glance. Instead, go and do something else.
If you need to look in the mirror because your are doing your hair or makeup, keep your gaze soft and avoid zooming in on the parts of your face or body that trouble you. Remember, that BITCH voice is trying to break you today, but you won’t let it win. This approach is simple yet not easy; that voice is like a siren, attempting to draw you in every possible way.
I am not suggesting that breaking the pattern will eliminate those difficult days entirely, but they will become less frequent, and you will learn to manage those feelings with intelligence. Control is power: you can choose how to handle that voice, or it will dictate your mood and keep you at its mercy.
