Vietnam Currency Exchange


If you're a traveler visiting Vietnam, you'll need to exchange your currency. There are several places where you can do this, including banks, hotels, airports, and malls. Depending on your destination, you'll need anywhere from fifty to one hundred dollars. You can also compare service rates from banks to those offered on the street to find the best deal. Be aware, however, that banks often offer less than the market rate.

The first banknotes circulated in Vietnam were issued by the National Bank of the country in the late seventies. These notes were of five, ten, and fifty dongs. A few years later, 30 and 100 dong notes were introduced. Then, the currency subsequently devalued by 1.0 percentage point in January and May.


The state bank of Vietnam has five series of banknotes. The 2003 series was a mixed series, so there was no fixed pattern. Currently, the Vietnamese dong is accepted in denominations of 100, 200, 500, 1,000, and 5,000. Its national currency is widely accepted throughout the world. In addition, the Vietnamese dollar is used in over a hundred countries. It is widely accepted in the United States. It is the official currency of the country.


While the Vietnamese currency devalues by 0.01075 USD against the US dollar, it has lost more than 1% against the dollar since the beginning of the year. A 0.5-2% commission rate is charged by the state bank to sell dollars in the free market. There are no fees or commissions associated with these transactions.
