Curriculum or No Curriculum? My Take on the Homeschooling Choice

Curriculum or No Curriculum? My Take on the Homeschooling Choice

When I first started homeschooling, one of the biggest questions I asked myself was: Do I really need a curriculum, or can I just piece things together myself? I’ll be honest, I’ve tried both. Some seasons we’ve leaned heavily on a curriculum, and other times we’ve tossed the books aside and let life itself be the lesson plan. Both paths have taught me so much, and I want to share a little of what I’ve learned along the way.

The Season of Curriculum

When we used a curriculum, it felt a little like having a safety net. The lesson plans were all there, the schedule was already made, and I could check off boxes at the end of the day. It gave me peace of mind that my kids were “on track” with what other children their age were learning.

But, let me tell you, it wasn’t always smooth sailing. Some mornings the kids dragged their feet through the lessons because it didn’t spark their interest. And sometimes, I felt more like a taskmaster than a mom, just pushing us through pages because that’s what the book said we had to do. Still, during busy seasons, curriculum was a blessing. It saved me time and gave us structure when life felt overwhelming.

The Season Without a Curriculum

Then there were times we ditched the curriculum. We followed our kids’ curiosity. If one of them got hooked on space, we piled up books about planets, watched documentaries, and even built cardboard rockets in the backyard. Math came alive when we baked bread or doubled recipes, and history felt real when we took field trips or read living books together.

It was freeing. Learning felt natural. But here’s the truth, it also took a lot more out of me. I had to plan, search, and sometimes second-guess if we were covering “enough.” Without that neat stack of lesson plans, I sometimes wondered, Are we doing this right?

The Sweet Spot

What I’ve learned over time is that we don’t have to pick one side forever. Some seasons call for the structure of a curriculum, while others blossom best in the freedom of interest-led learning. Honestly, our homeschool has thrived the most when I’ve blended the two, using curriculum as a backbone but leaving space for curiosity and creativity.

From My Heart: If you’re a mama trying to decide, know this, there’s no perfect way. The beauty of homeschooling is that you can change, adapt, and grow with your children. Whether you lean on a curriculum or let life be the lesson plan, your kids are learning in the way that fits your family best. And that, to me, is what makes homeschooling such a gift.
