Keeping God First in Family Life

Keeping God First in Family Life

If I’ve learned anything on this journey of motherhood, marriage, and day-to-day life, it’s this: when God isn’t at the center, everything else feels shaky. The schedules, the chores, the teaching, the meals, they all start to feel heavier than they should. But when I pause, reset, and place God back at the heart of my family, the weight shifts. There’s peace, even in the chaos.

Keeping God first in family life isn’t always about doing big things. It’s about weaving Him into the little things. For me, that looks like:

  • Morning prayer before the day begins. Even if it’s just a short prayer at the breakfast table, it’s our way of reminding ourselves who we’re leaning on for strength.
  • Scripture in our conversations. When one of the kids feels discouraged, we’ll open the Bible and find a verse to speak over the situation. It’s not about preaching; it’s about pointing them back to truth.
  • Making decisions prayerfully. Whether it’s homeschooling choices, family meals, or bigger life changes, I’ve learned to take a breath and ask, “God, what do You want for us?” before I rush into deciding.
  • Gratitude in the everyday. Saying “thank you, Lord” when dinner comes out just right, or when laughter fills the house after a hard day, reminds me that His hand is always at work.

It’s not about perfection. There are days I get short-tempered, forget to pray, or feel overwhelmed. But even in those moments, I try to circle back to Him. My children don’t need a perfect mom; they need a mom who keeps her eyes on God and shows them how to do the same.

When we put God first, everything else finds its place. Our family isn’t perfect, but we are anchored. And in a world that often feels unstable, that anchor is everything.

Practical Tips for Keeping God First at Home

  1. Start the day with prayer. A simple family prayer sets the tone before the busyness begins.
  2. Create a family scripture board. Write down verses on sticky notes or a chalkboard in your kitchen or living room.
  3. Pray over meals. Don’t just say grace, take a moment to truly thank God for the food and the hands that prepared it.
  4. Make worship part of your week. Whether at church or in your living room with music, worship together as a family.
  5. Set aside quiet time. Encourage each family member to spend a few minutes alone with God, even young kids with a children’s Bible.
  6. Talk about God in daily life. Use teachable moments, like a beautiful sunset or answered prayer, to remind your kids that He’s always nearby.
  7. End the day with gratitude. Before bed, ask each child (and yourself) to name one thing they’re thankful for.

At the end of the day, it’s not about grand gestures, it’s about faith in the everyday moments. When we put God first, love flows stronger, peace lasts longer, and our home feels covered in His presence.
