Health News Media Reporting

Accurate health news media reporting is vital for conveying scientific research findings to the public in a way that avoids misunderstanding, mistrust and harmful health behaviours. We analysed a press release, journal article and online news reports on the COVID-19 vaccinations to identify mechanisms that may result in misinformation.

A 'pressure cocktail' exists between journalists, scientists and their institutions that can prioritise newsworthiness ahead of scientific integrity to the detriment of public health. This may lead to a combination of sensationalism, misrepresentation, clinical recommendations and subjectivity in a science-dominated news story.

Health News Alerts

Health Alerts are timely, critical information about a health threat or issue that may impact local and/or regional populations. These messages provide information that is vital to public health officials, laboratorians, and clinicians. These messages are provided in two levels of importance: Alert and Advisory. An Alert conveys the highest level of importance and warrants immediate action by health officials, laboratorians, or clinicians; an Advisory provides important information about a specific incident or situation; but does not require immediate action.

Health News Alerts are delivered via the CDC’s Health Alert Network (HAN) to more than one million health care providers, patients and citizens across the country. These messages include communicable disease outbreaks, immunization updates and emerging infectious diseases that affect the local population. Clinicians can subscribe to receive these messages by submitting their contact information. This is an excellent way to stay up-to-date with current events in your area. Visit the HAN website for more information or to sign up today.

Health News Videos

Health news videos can be a powerful tool to disseminate information on the latest public health concerns. As such, we are implementing new features that more effectively highlight videos produced by authoritative sources in our search results.

As part of this effort, we’re introducing a new feature called a health content shelf. The shelf will appear next to searches for specific health topics. It will feature video from reputable sources and context cues designed to help people better evaluate the quality of the content.

In addition, we’re adding a nifty new health source information panel on some of our most popular videos. These panels will include a small video thumbnail and a link to more in-depth content from the source, along with information about the source’s provenance.
