Window Measuring Tips

If you want to install a new WDMA window in your home, you must know the correct method for window measuring. The process is quite similar to that of measuring a width. Ideally, you should take the measurements from the top horizontal board of the window to the bottom sill. To do this, take measurements on the far left and right sides as well as in the middle of the window.

Measure from the inside of one jamb to the inside of the opposite jamb

When replacing an old door, it is crucial to know how to measure the jambs. The width of the jambs must match the thickness of the finished wall. For example, a door with a two-by-four frame and 1/2 inch drywall will have a jamb depth of seven-and-a-half inches. If the jambs are too thin, door trim will not fit properly.

Using the same measuring tape as for the height of doors, you can measure the height and width of pre-hung doors and decorative sidelights with a tape measure. You can also measure the width by running the tape measure vertically from the outer jamb to the jamb on the opposite side.

After measuring the jambs, subtracting the size of the door shims from the measurement is important. These shims are used to level the door and secure it in place. This can cause the jamb size to be smaller than the original jamb.

To measure the jambs on the interior door, you must remove the door trim. To measure the interior side of the door, remove the casing. You can use a pry bar or screwdriver to remove the casing around the door. If the casing is made of caulking, it is recommended to break it apart first. This will avoid stretching the paint and trim.

If you find the door jambs too narrow, you can add shims between the jamb header and the wall stud. The shims should create an even margin between the jamb and the door. To adjust the jamb width, make sure to pre-drill holes through the door stop in the location of the shims on the header. Then, use two-1/2' finishing nails to secure the jamb header.

Measure from the inside of the upper left corner to the inside of the lower right corner

When measuring a window, you should start by ensuring the corners are square. In addition, 90-degree corners are needed for window screens or storm windows. Then, measure from the inside of the upper left corner to the inside of the lower right corner of the window. Once you have a proper measurement, you should consult a contractor to ensure the window is the right size.

When measuring a window, take measurements at the top, left, and right corners of the frame. Using a ruler, you can make sure you measure every angle. The inside of the upper left corner will be narrower than the inside of the bottom right corner.

Once you have the correct measurement, the next step is to make sure the window is square. The easiest way to do this is to measure diagonally from the upper left corner to the lower right corner. This is the best way to measure a window frame.
