Migration Diamond Daze

Diamond Daze - a different use for border prints

Recently I used a border print in a different way. The pattern, Diamond Daze, has a top and bottom border to lengthen a wallhanging to a lap quilt. Before, when making this pattern, it was simply a print in those two spaces. The border print is four repeats across the width of fabric. The border is cut less than the width of the repeat, so I was able to use the top of the repeat on the top of the quilt and the bottom of the repeat on the bottom border. The fabric is Stonehenge Migration by Northcott and is shipping to stores in June 2024.

BUT--half of the border print is unused. I needed to come up with something to do with all that leftover border print. You could cut 8-10 10" squares to use in another pattern. You can see the faint lines in the top border here representing 10" cuts.

It would work in some of my other patterns: Diamond Time (coming soon) and Just Goosing Around (here or here), are two.

You could also use it for a small tablerunner or placemats.

Triangle Frenzy by Bunnie Cleland is a pattern that I think will work. There is a tablerunner pattern using a border print which has 60-degree cuts on the ends to make a pointed runner. (I don't remember the name of the pattern and can't find it by searching.) I'm not sure what size you'd get with only two lengths of print.

In the past I've used 24" panels for the center. The Migration collection has running yardage instead of a panel. This eliminates the need for side borders to make the center large enough to fit the pieced border. It was fun to see how it would look without those side borders, and I like it!

The Diamond Daze pattern includes a wallhanging size also. Using the running yardage you can choose to use the top (one selvage)

or the bottom (the other selvage) for the center.

This is such beautiful fabric! I wish I could start sewing it right now!!
