Memories

Today I finished a very special memory quilt.

The day of Greg and Ally's wedding, they asked me if I could fix some quilts for them. Sure I can do that.

I don't remember if I looked at them then, or if it wasn't til later at home.

There were two quilts, one made by Greg's grandmother and one made by Ally's grandmother. Both quilts beyond repair. They were well-loved and completely worn out. Both had already been patched up.

The seams on both were coming apart. The batting was in shreds. Both had been tied with yarn, and there were holes from that.

There was no way to make either of them into a usable quilt.

I suggested taking parts of each and making a new quilt. Ally said that would bring both families together.

It took me a long while to finally get working on them. I dreaded doing anything with them, I just wasn't sure what to do.

I finally just started and clipped some of the yarn ties and started ripping out blocks. Greg's quilt was bigger, so I had more to choose from. I had to do some piecing to make Ally's blocks match the size of Greg's.

Once I started it didn't take long, cutting apart the blocks was the most time consuming part.

As I was ripping I remembered the stabilizer for t-shirt quilts and decided to use on the back of the blocks. It would have been like sewing kleenex's together without the stabilizer.

It didn't take long to sew the blocks together. Then I quilted it and today I put on the binding, quilt label, and the hanging sleeve.

And it is done!
