I recently submitted several designs to Northcott for a future release. I really loved the fabrics, but didn't have a lot of time to play around. To save some time, and still submit designs using these beautiful fabrics, I simply used "old" patterns and put in the new fabrics in EQ.
Two of those designs were accepted, Squares Afloat and Diamond Daze.
Previously for Diamond Daze I had used a 24" panel and added borders to make it fit the pieced borders. This time, instead of a panel it was running yardage, so I could make the "panel" section any size I wanted. Little did I know I would end up rewriting the pattern. For this new center, the "first" border was not needed. I had called the fabric for that border "Fabric 2". I decided to make that fabric the last fabric on the fabric requirements list, so it wouldn't look like I missed something by not having a yardage amount for it. I also had to add what to do with the running yardage as opposed to a panel.
This is the first one, featuring the 2022 All Minnesota Shop Hop fabric. I needed to add a small border to the sides of the panel to get the correct width, and a second border on the sides to fit the top and bottom pieced border.
This is a smaller quilt with the pieced border on the top and bottom only for a wallhanging.
Squares Afloat originally had the frames all the same fabric. When I was playing with the Northcott fabric, I added a second fabric for alternate blocks. And that means more changes to make. It also changed the numbers of the fabrics, since I had to add in another frame color. So much for taking the easy way out!!
I've made this one several different times.
Quilt Minnesota 2018 with a mitered border.
Frogland Friends with a straight border, using the panel for the backing.
This is flannel, straight border, Return to Cub Lake I think it was. It's twin size
This one is Quilt Minnesota 2020, with a mitered border.
I've had my break, now I need to get back to making sure the revisions are correct. (I'm soooo thankful for good testers!!)
