I have a design that I've been playing with for several months. Today I'm testing it and writing the pattern.
The pattern will include templates, but I'll be using Deb Tucker's Studio 180 rulers, although in ways not explained in the instructions. I decided I should show some pictures of what I'm doing.
The Diamond Rects ruler is what I used for cutting the diamonds, the V-Block for the small triangles, and simply cut rectangles for the large triangles.
After cutting all the diamonds and triangles, I laid them out how they were to be sewn together.
(The diamond really IS diamond shaped and the triangles ARE the same size. I didn't see how distorted they looked in the picture until I had them all sewn together.) The triangles are sewn to opposite sides of the diamond.
After attaching the small triangles, the large triangles are sewn to the remaining sides of the diamond.
Then comes the part where I used the ruler in a way different than the ruler instructions.
I used the lines on the Diamond Rects as the instructions told me to line up with the seam lines. Instead of trimming the right side and the top, I only trimmed above the tip of the diamond to the left edge. In the second picture, you can see the little trimmed-off edge in the middle of the top triangle. I did this on both top and bottom edges of the diamond, then I switched to a square ruler to finish trimming the block to the correct size.
After that, it's sewing as normal to finish the quilt top.
The fabric I'm using for my sample is the Creation collection by Northcott, available in December of last year. Northcott has a store finder on the page if you're interested in this beautiful fabric!
