Sewing blocks together--pairs, rows, or columns?

Many patterns will tell you to sew your quilt blocks together by sewing into rows or columns.

Many years ago, I believe it was Mary Ellen Hopkins on Simply Quilts, who shared her method of joining blocks together. Rather than sewing long strips of blocks, she recommended sewing blocks into pairs, then pairs into pairs, etc., until all the blocks are joined. Her theory was that it was easier to work with smaller sections, gradually getting bigger.

I tried this method and found that I liked it much better.

For me, it was easier to match up seams, or points. It's less to press at one time.

Give it a try, maybe you'll like it too!
