Reimagine, Don't Discard: Giving Old Clothes New Purpose

Before you donate or throw away a garment you no longer wear, it is worth asking whether it could become something new. Redesigning what you already own saves money, keeps good fabric out of the trash, and gives you something nobody else has.

A gentle way to start:

1. Choose a piece you already like the fabric of. The cut may be wrong, but the cloth, color or pattern is something you enjoy.

2. Decide what is wrong with it. Too long, too wide, worn at the elbows, an outdated collar. Naming the problem points to the fix.

3. Practice on something cheap first. Test your idea on a garment you would not mind losing before you cut a favorite.

4. Unpick before you cut. Taking out seams with a seam ripper often gives you more fabric to work with than you expect.

5. Mend openly. Visible stitching, a patch in a contrasting color or a new trim can become the best part of the piece.

Take a photo before and after. A quick before and after picture is the best way to show what a reimagined piece can be, and it is the kind of thing readers love to see.

The idea behind it is the same one that runs through everything at Pofi Koncepts: what already exists can often be restored, redesigned or given new purpose rather than discarded.
