An evolving artistic practice by Iliana Ovtcharova | PROJECT R1000
A painting does not have to end at the canvas. It can become the beginning of something new.
I have always been interested in the possibilities that emerge when an artwork is viewed from a different perspective. What happens when I take an original painting and allow it to develop beyond its physical form? Can I preserve its essential character while discovering a new visual identity?
These questions have led me to develop Evolving Art, my ongoing exploration of the relationship between traditional painting and digital transformation.
From Original Painting to New Interpretation
For me, an original painting is never just an image. It carries the physical presence of its surface, the movement of the brush, the relationships between colours and the accumulated decisions that shaped its final form.
When I bring one of my paintings into a digital environment, I do not necessarily want to reproduce it exactly. Instead, I explore what else it might become.
I experiment with colour palettes, composition, texture, structure and visual rhythm. Sometimes I make subtle adjustments; sometimes I explore a more substantial transformation. I look for possibilities that reveal a different side of the original work while maintaining a meaningful connection to it.
The physical painting remains an independent artwork. The digital interpretation becomes another stage in my creative journey.

Technology as a Creative Instrument
I use digital tools and explore generative technologies as instruments for experimentation. They allow me to investigate visual directions, test alternatives and explore possibilities that might otherwise require considerably more time.
But generating an image is not the same as making an artistic decision.
I evaluate the results, compare variations, reject those that do not serve my intention and refine the direction that feels right. I pay attention to whether a change strengthens the composition, whether a new palette creates the atmosphere I am looking for, and whether a modified texture contributes something meaningful to the work.
Technology can expand my possibilities, but the artistic decisions remain mine.

Learning Through Experimentation
Not every experiment leads to a finished artwork. Some versions reveal an interesting possibility; others show me what I want to avoid.
I may explore a softer palette, extend a composition, change the balance between visual elements or investigate how a painting might work on a different scale.
Through this process, I learn more about the original painting itself. I discover which elements are essential to its character and which can evolve without losing the connection to its origins.
For me, this is one of the most valuable aspects of Evolving Art: the opportunity to continue questioning, discovering and developing an artwork beyond the moment when I consider the original painting complete.
Beyond the Original Canvas
My interest in digital transformation also extends to the ways an artwork can be experienced.
Selected interpretations may become fine art prints, large-format wall art or collections designed for interior spaces. I am also exploring the possibilities of developing original wallpaper designs in the future.
Each application presents a different creative challenge. A composition that works beautifully as a small image may need further development to achieve the same visual impact at a larger scale. Details, proportions and the relationship between the artwork and its surroundings all become part of the process.
I see these possibilities not simply as ways to reproduce an image in different formats, but as opportunities to explore how my artistic work can enter new visual contexts.
An Ongoing Journey
Evolving Art is not a fixed formula or a destination. It is a practice that continues to develop through observation, experimentation and artistic selection.
I bring together my experience of physical painting with digital methods to explore new interpretations of my work. I want to preserve the individuality of each original painting while remaining open to the possibilities that emerge when I reconsider it.
For me, the most interesting question is not how many variations I can create, but whether a new interpretation has something meaningful of its own to express.

The original painting is not the end of the process. It is where my next creative question begins.
Evolving Art is my author-defined artistic practice within PROJECT R1000. My digital interpretations may involve image editing and generative technologies, guided by my artistic intention, critical selection and final creative decisions.
