Soundtrack for the Studio: How Music (from the 80s) Shapes My Creative Flow

There's something about 80s music that feels alchemical. I don't know if it's the mix of grit, glamour, melancholy and defiance, or the inclusivity, or just the upbeat, good writing and tunes. When I'm in my studio I often have The Stranglers or The B52s playing in the background. Their sounds remind me that beauty doesn't have to be polished and imperfections can be very electric.

I think of color the way those songs use notes; deep magenta hums like a bass, flashes of colored foils feel like keyboards cutting through the darkness. Music is color theory in motion for me, and guides my hands as I twist wire or embed fragments in resin.

Maybe that's why I love 80s music so much, because it is my era, an era that embraced contradiction by saying, I'm me, deal with it. Punk, pop, rebellion, romance, all coexisting is exactly what I try to capture in my jewelry.
